Open enrollment for health insurance for residents in Prince George’s County is officially underway.   Individuals looking to take advantage of generous new savings, health plan upgrades, or make changes to existing health insurance accounts can now do so up until January 15, 2022.  Residents can also enroll in discounted dental coverage, available only during this time.

With the passage of the of the American Rescue Plan (ARPA) earlier this year, there are better savings, more affordable plans, and even more discounts.  Enrollment is open to residents in Prince George’s County who are 18 to 64 years of age.  Among those who stand to benefit during this open enrollment are young adults between the ages of 18 to 34, and households with higher incomes, who may achieve greater savings than in previous years.

A record number of residents enrolled in health insurance through Maryland Health Connection (MHC), the state-based marketplace.  More than 39,000 Prince George’s County residents enrolled into coverage through MHC’s Covid-19 Special Enrollment Period (SEP), that ended in August, more than any other county in the state.  To maintain insurance, however, re-enrollment will need to take place during open enrollment for 2022 coverage.

Residents in Prince George’s County will have a choice of plans that include CareFirst, Kaiser Permanente, and UnitedHealthcare.  All plans available through MHC cover important health benefits, including doctor visits, prescriptions, mental health services, and more.  All plans include free preventive care, such as the annual wellness visit, flu shots, cancer screenings, and more.

Certified health insurance navigators, many who are bi-lingual, are ready to help residents in person and virtually to sign up for a health plan, to help understand coverage options and to provide financial help. Trained brokers are also available to help residents throughout the entire six-week open enrollment. Medicaid enrollment is year-round.  People who have coverage through Medicaid will receive a notice when it’s time to renew. During open enrollment, PGC Health Connect navigators are available with extended hours, during the week, evenings, and weekends.  For more information or to set up an appointment, call (301) 927-4500
